The lymphatic system carries fluid, waste and immune cells through the body and back into the blood. Unlike blood, lymph has no central pump — it moves with muscle contraction, breathing and movement. Science is still discovering it: in 2015 researchers found lymphatic vessels lining the brain that were missing from textbooks (Louveau et al., Nature, 2015).

Ways to keep lymph moving: walk and move often, breathe deeply from the belly, rebound or bounce gently, stay hydrated, and try gentle self-massage toward the collarbones. Manual lymphatic drainage by a trained therapist is used after surgery and for lymphedema.
